The monodrama The Wise and Heroic Duke Janko Katić presents a brief account of the life of one of the most prominent commanders of the First Serbian Uprising.

The play also serves as a reliable historical record, as it was written by Milovan Vitezović, a distinguished authority on history and a renowned Serbian author. The character of Janko Katić is compellingly portrayed by actor Aleksandar Dunić, who performs in an authentic Serbian commander’s costume designed by Boris Čakširanin.

A well-educated man for his time, Janko Katić spoke both Turkish and German fluently. He served as Karađorđe’s official interpreter and was one of his most loyal associates and followers until his untimely death shortly before the Battle of Mišar in 1806.

This performance reminds audiences of the celebrated heroes of our past, from a time when keeping one’s word, honour, justice, nobility and humanity were held as the highest values of the Serbian people.

The monodrama has been performed successfully for many years. It has been staged in educational institutions and cultural centres, at fortresses, in church courtyards and at historical sites throughout Belgrade and Serbia, as well as abroad. To date, it has been performed 800 times.
